Most South East Asian countries have developed their own IP organisations locally to help promote IPR issues. IP Komodo will over coming weeks provide details for various countries.
In Thailand, IPR holders and representatives have formed an organization called the Prevention and Suppression of Intellectual Property Infringement Committee (Private Sector). This body encourages action against counterfeit goods and its major success was the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2003, the “Memorandum of Understanding on the Cooperation of the Relevant Government Agencies and the Private Sector to Prevent and Suppress the Smuggling of Infringing Products”. The objective of this MOU is to set up a scheme to monitor infringing goods in Thailand and it leads to regular raids on behalf of members who have signed the MOU.
Separately IP practitioners and IP right holders have another organization The Intellectual Property Association of Thailand, which plays a role in IP-related matters such as drafting new laws, providing IP training, assisting the government on policy etc.
