Pajchima Tanasanti, Director-General of Thailand IP department under the Ministry of Commerce said to the media last week that “IP violators in the country now tend to copy from online systems, rather than making CD or DVD copies which were earlier popular.” and as a result Thailand's IP violation problem will decline. He pointed to a drop in residents buying pirated DVD films and music.
But he conceded that “it should be more difficult for authorities to control the violations of intellectual property rights, as violators could copy from smart phones or smart televisions".
A curious statement all in all. IP departments all around Asia spend a huge amount of time telling people that they are getting better at IP protection. The Thai IPD seems to think it has won the war because the problem has gone online. Is that not their problem?
