Brunei's patent system

Brunei Darussalam decided to join the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) so kicked off the process in April, aiming for the PCT to come into effect in July 2012, as the 145th member of the PCT.
Brunei’s Patent Order only came into effect in 2011 (replacing the old Inventions Act which allowed re-registration of Singapore, Malaysia and United Kingdom/European patents) and the implementing rules in early 2012. The last two months have seen around 20 patents filed a month primarily in the pharma field. The University of Brunei Darussalam seems to be the largest local filer. No-one expects a rush of patent filings in this small state, but IP Komodo believes that a full patent system is part of the innovation ecosystem, which creates a knowledge economy.
